Versus Player

Project type
Open source creation of dual-stream, interactive communication innovation technology

Project aim
The aim of this project is to create an easy-to-use editor, which allows for time-synced, dual-stream, interactive, off-grid or real-time online communication. The ultimate aim is to enable communicators to enhance the impact of their information presentation. This technology will eventually revolutionize communication industries which typically invest much time and energy in pre- and post-production of online material, such as the education, news and music industries. It will be a decisive factor in demonstrating the superiority of reciever-controlled electronic communication over sender-controlled media such as books, radio, television and movies.

Gamechanging innovation

By using more than one time-synced stream the sender can use all types of media (raw video+audio, images, text, hyperlinks, music) to broadcast his message. The receiver can then choose her preferred combination of media to access this information. This allows for easily accessible indexing of the content of longer films or presentations. It also allows the receiver direct access to information resources mentioned directly or indirectly in the video stream. Finally, incorporating torrent technology allows users to access the information offline, at their own pace, not needing to pay for internet access while they pause play to digest content or access resources through attached hyperlinks.

Why multi-stream torrents?

Communicating through several time-synched streams allows the sender of information to use their preferred combination of all available types of technology and media to enhance their communication. It supports collaboration in the production of material, something which tends to increase quality and credibility. It can turn any recorded monologue into a dialogue through simply pausing the original in one stream and playing your comment in the other. It also allows the sender to present raw video footage – such as a talking torso in front of a camera – which has immediacy and high credibility because of the lack of editing, and directly contextualize it using other images, text and links to further resources. The user can then shuffle through an index of a longer presentation, select which parts of it they are interested in and open the right number of time-synced media streams that best suits their uptake habits. Allowing your presentation with selected attached resources to be downloaded as a torrent, makes it equally accessible to people without unlimitted internet access.

Why open source?

Conducting this project as an open source project allows potential users to suggest functionalities and provide support and feedback during the developments process. Additionally, it allows the involved organizations and companies to access continually updated positive branding value by association with the product before it is released on the market. It also means, however, that other interested parties may develop their own version of the product faster or cheaper. Open source programming and product design means that the end product will be low-grade and thus able to run on old hardware as well. Finally, since this is an open source project no single entity can apply for patents or copyright on any sub-element of the final product, which will ultimately benefit all users.

Product description

  • Core functionalities:

A) Simple video/audio editing.

B) Flash encoding of PP slide presentations.

C) Synchronised timecoding of separate on-screen streams.

D) Receiver control of combination of media running simultaneously.

  • Further development possibilities:

I) Attaching automatic torrent download of pre-selected key webpages hyperlinked in presentation.

II) Meshing with existing video editors to enhance – rather than attempting to supercede their product and contest  -their user base.

III) Simple sender filtering of access to certain information elements in presentation, allowing an incomplete version of a presentation to function as advertising for the full version which is would then be sold as a commercial product.

IV) Smartphone bluetooth application which allows several linked smartphones to show one stream each of a dual-stream presentation.
